I recently read a book caleld “Putting Out of Your Mind.” Actually, I listened to it. In it, the author talks about some focusing techniques that really help you make your putting about a physical motion, getting rid of all of the distractions that can so easily screw up an easy putt. I think it’s well worth the ~$10 I paid to buy it.Also, as another user said, a routine is a very valuable tool to help you get in a groove and feel comfortable on just about any putt. The main strategy I use (which I got from the book) is to pick out a very particular target and focus all of my thinking on that spot. Then, I let my body take over and “do its thing” without my mind getting in the way. Generally, this works well, like tossing someone a ball. If you just let your body do it, and don’t overthink it, your sub/un-conscious mind will be able to perform remarkably well. This doesn’t mean to just walk up and smack the ball. Examine the green. Pick your line. Take a few practice putts. But once you pick your target and get over the ball, be ready to pull the trigger quickly to avoid your mind screwing up your stroke. I find that this method gives me the smoothest stroke and more 1 putts. In fact, I’ve have about 3 or 4 fewer putts per round recently, and a whole lot of tap-in 2nd putts since reading this book.
Putting. Line it up, take into account the break more on wet green and less on dry, more on long/fast putts and less on short/slow. Lastly, imanige a circle about 20% of the distance to the hole if you’re 30 feet away, imanige a six-foot circle around the cup. You want to put the ball within *that* circle. If you’re 10 feet away, imanige a two-foot circle. You’ll notice that with less pressure to hole out in one putt, you’ll putt better.
